We set for Laguna Grande in our motor canoe. Along the way we saw squirrel monkies. These guys are cool. They live in troups of over 300 and move about 10 km a day through the tree tops. They are great to watch as they are continuously jumping. We also saw Hoatzin which are fascinating as they have hardly evolved since the jurassic period. They are the only birds in the world that have claws on their wings, a throwback to dinosaur times. Locally they are known as `stinky turkies` because they have a simular digestive system to cows in that they have several stomachs some with bacteria which don`t smell nice. It is because of this digestive system that they have survived to the modern day. It allows they to eat many plants that other animals cannot. Biology lesson over onto sociology . . . After visiting the lagoon (awesome - see photos) we arrived at a tribal village. When you hear the phrase tribal village CocaCola and satalite TV are not the first things that spring to mind. Entry from: Vina del Mar, Chile Entry Title: "Christmas at the beach" Entry: "The bus from Santiago only took 2 hours and so we arrived in Vina Del Mar in plenty of time to look around before dinner. Our hotel is lovely. We have a huge room with our own bathroom, dinner table and cable tv. We are in absolute luxury compared to what we are used to from a hostel! We checked in and made use of the amazingly warm shower and then we decided to look around. Our hotel is not far from any of the beaches so we walked down to the nearest one and took our first paddle in the Pacific since Australia. It was mega cold but very refreshing! We walked along the beach and then decided to walk around the coast to see the other two beaches. We passed a beautiful castle on the way, which we meant to go back to but never got around to it, although we did see it lit up at night and it looked just as beautiful then too. The second beach wasn't great as it was tiny and separated the river from the ocean, the river was filthy and so we didn't really fancy sunbathing here. We carried on walking to the next beach which is the biggest one in Vina Del Mar and turned out to be a fantastic beach. Entry from: Okavango Delta, Botswana Entry Title: "Okavango Delta" Entry: "On the tour we spent two days in the Okavango Delta. We left on a small plane from the Maun airport to fly to Gunns Camp in the Delta. The plane ride was beautiful. It was a fantastic view of the town of Maun as well as the Delta and the animals roaming around below. Once we landed on the small dirt landing strip, we had to walk to our camp. On the way we encountered two elephants having a snack on a nearby tree. As we approached the camp there was another elephant there to greet us. The camp was on a waterway which made it easy for our guides to fetch us in the morning in their traditional boats called Mokoro's. Our guides took us along a waterway to an island where we split up into two groups to go on a walking safari. During our stay we went on three such safari's. We walked through the bush and saw, elephants, giraffe, zebra, tons of Impala, worthhogs, baboons and other small animals. During the hottest part of the day, the middle of the day, we relaxed at the camp in the small pool and napping in our tents. The camp was also home to a family of warthogs (pumba's from the lion king). They just walked around eating the grass and slept under the platforms our our tents.
